We are so excited for our big launch here at Cranial Island studios. It seems like just yesterday we were sitting in our living room, figuring out how to work on our first animation project, while eating bags of candy and watching a great deal more Netflix content than is probably strictly healthy.

Screen Shot 2014-12-14 at 2.25.35 PMMaybe I should introduce ourselves. My name is Carla and I am a freelance Illustrator and designer. A relatively recent immigrant (emigrant? I always use the wrong word here) to the Bay Area, I soon realized that I also enjoy meeting new people as much as I enjoy drawing, and many of these people I wanted very much to work with.

Lindsey (he’s a guy) is an animator who in 2012 graduated from the Academy of Art University with an MFA in 3D animation. One day we were sitting around and he said, “You know what, I think I want to learn how to do 2D animation in Flash”… a few tutorials later and he was already making people get hit by cars and fall off high ledges. In Flash, I guess that’s an important point to clarify. As we started getting more freelance work, it became clear to both of us that perhaps starting a company would be the most sensible (and fun!) way for us to go. Cranial Island Studios was born.

Skipping ahead to this fall, it dawned on us: We need a new website. Our old website was fine for its time, but we’ve done so many new things that reflect who are in the last year, and we felt it was time to share them with you. First of all, who are we? We are an animation and design studio with lots of flair. Well, Carla brings the flair and Lindsey brings reasonable discourse (in between laughing at his own jokes and speaking in riddles). Together we are the perfect combination of wham, zing, and a little grounding.

Screen Shot 2014-12-14 at 1.40.25 PMWe are also bringing to the new site a stronger theme of decor and fun. For example, the background of this site began life as one of my watercolor paintings, and I also drew the (incredibly accurate) self portraits used in the “About Us” section. Along with our new reels and listing our partners, clients and testimonials, we felt things were becoming more representative of where we are going into 2015.

LucyIntroFinally, we want a mascot! Meet Lucy, all-American pomeranian, and Carla and Lindsey’s dog-niece in New York. Lucy’s favorite things include getting dressed up in sweaters and ponchos, eating doggy ice cream, riding in the car, and running in circles. All we asks is that she doesn’t do all those things at once, that tends to leave a mess.
